Mayo Clinic: Men’s Health Center

Overview

Urinalysis is the cornerstone of the work-up for urinary symptoms. It is best to always come with a full bladder to a urology clinic and ask if you need to give a sample. The urine is analyzed for signs of blood and infection. Sometimes, the urine is sent off for culture to help determine what bacteria may be causing an infection. Keep in mind that all men who self catheterize or have an indwelling catheter will likely grow bacteria in their urine culture. This only needs to be treated if you have symptoms or if you are undergoing certain urinary procedures.
